Why start with audio stories?
Audio stories allow children to absorb complex language and plots without the pressure of reading dense text. The spoken word, delivered by skilled narrators, brings the drama and emotion of Shakespeare's works to life in a way that feels natural and entertaining.
Choosing the right version
Look for retellings that preserve the essence of the original stories while simplifying language and pacing. The Stories from Shakespeare Yoto Card does exactly that, offering faithful yet accessible adaptations that respect the source material.
How to introduce Shakespeare with Yoto Cards
- Start with a single play: Listen to one retelling, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, which has a lighthearted plot and magical elements that appeal to children. Avoid starting with tragedies like Hamlet. Choose a comedy or romance first to build interest.
- Discuss the story together: After listening, ask your child what they remember about the characters and what happened. This reinforces comprehension without feeling like a quiz. Keep the conversation open-ended and playful.
- Connect to other media: Watch a short animated adaptation or read a picture book version of the same play. Comparing different formats deepens understanding and shows how stories can be told in many ways. Use multiple formats to reinforce themes and vocabulary.
