Yoto Says: A powerful story set in Chicago's South Side about a boy who discovers the poetry of Langston Hughes.

When eleven-year-old Langston's mother dies in 1946, Langston and his father leave rural Alabama for Chicago's brown belt as a part of what came to be known as the Great Migration. It's lonely in the small apartment with just the two of them, and Langston is bullied at school. But his new home has one fantastic thing. Unlike the whites-only library in Alabama, the local public library welcomes everyone. There, hiding out after school, Langston discovers another Langston, a poet whom he learns inspired his mother enough to name her only son after him.

We listened to this on a long drive and my daughter got quiet in the back seat, then asked me what a "kitchenette" was. It opened up a whole conversation about the Great Migration I wasn't expecting from a kids' story.

I wasn't sure my daughter would stick with a story about a boy in 1946 Chicago, but she finished the whole card in one sitting and asked what Langston Hughes poems were next. The narrator handles the South Side setting and the heavier parts about losing his mother gently enough for her age.

Olivia ★★★★★

My son listened to this one twice in a row on a long car ride, and even I got pulled in by the way it captures Chicago in 1946. The narration really brings out the loneliness and hope as Langston discovers Hughes’s poetry.
