Yoto Says: The rebellious origins of one of Mexico's most iconic creations of art.

Funny Bones tells the story of how the amusing calaveras-skeletons performing various everyday or festive activities-came to be. They are the creation of Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852-1913). In a country that was not known for freedom of speech, he first drew political cartoons, much to the amusement of the local population but not the politicians. He continued to draw cartoons throughout much of his life, but he is best known today for his calavera drawings. They have become synonymous with Mexico's Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival.

Harper L. ★★★★★

I love how this digital card dives into the rebellious side of Posada's calaveras, not just the festive skeletons you usually see. The storytelling really brings the history to life, and it's perfect for learning something new during Day of the Dead.

The way this explains the rebellious origins of the calaveras kept my whole family listening on a long drive. I had no idea skeletons doing everyday chores could carry so much history. The narration makes Posada's story feel alive rather than like a dry art lesson.

William F. ★★★★★

I picked this up for my kid during our Day of the Dead unit and we both ended up hooked. The way the narration weaves in Posada's actual political cartoons makes the skeletons feel like real characters instead of just decorations. It's short, but we've replayed it at least five times already.
